OVERVIEW

UNFINISHED SPACES
No place is ever finished

A friend of ours has a phobia of unfinished spaces. It sounds like a narrow fear. It may be the widest one there is. Everything is in shift, nothing settles into its final form. To fear the unfinished is, in a way, to fear the world as it actually is.

A journey that ends at a threshold no one crosses. Two people agree to meet, neither comes, and the camera waits anyway while the light changes. A story that breaks off mid-sentence. A place its inhabitants keep deliberately incomplete, as if finishing it would be the start of its end. None of these arrive. Each holds something an ending would have closed off.

Unfinished Spaces starts from that condition. The interval, the threshold, the shift that never settles. A space can be physical, mental, social, or a single frame. It can be approached as fear, as attraction, or both at once.

INTENT

We are looking for work that stays in the interval. Work that holds back from resolution, that leaves its own form open, or that registers a world in constant shift without trying to fix it in place. Work that treats incompleteness as a state to inhabit, not a problem to solve.

We welcome both subtle and direct approaches. Documentary or experimental. Fear or attraction. The work should reflect a clear engagement with this condition, where the medium itself becomes part of the question.

This overview is intended to provide context, not to limit your artistic expression. You may choose to focus on any single aspect of these themes/keywords.

Should the curators deem it necessary, you will be asked for additional text to contextualize your submission.

MISSION

Unfinished Spaces gathers work that stays with what has not settled. Not as a lack, but as a condition.

Every place, image, and life is in transition. The unfinished is not the exception. It is the rule we prefer not to see.

By bringing together a range of practices at MONO in Firenze, we hope to build a shared reflection on what remains open, what an ending would close off, and how visual work can hold a world that never stops shifting.
